Lent is a season when we reflect on Christ’s sacrifice by being more intentional in our faith and daily lives. This year, the Christian Education Committee invites you to observe this Lenten season by reading The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers: Spiritual Insights from the World’s Most Beloved Neighbor by Amy Hollingsworth—author, educator, speaker, and a close friend of Presbyterian minister, Rev. Fred Rogers.
This thoughtful book is a loving tribute to Mister Rogers, whom many of us remember from childhood for his wisdom, humility, and quiet courage. While his message was offered to children, it was never meant only for them. Fred Rogers lived a faith that spoke through his actions rather than words—teaching God’s love without ever preaching. Perhaps that is a meaningful goal for us this Lent: to let our faith show in who we are and how we live.
The book is organized into nine short, readable chapters centered on what Mr. Rogers called “toast sticks”—a phrase inspired by a special childhood treat his grandmother made for him. These “toast sticks” reflect the values that shaped his life, including silence, prayer, the Holy Spirit, honesty, loving our neighbors, forgiveness, humility, perseverance through difficult times, and hope in Heaven. After Easter, as we have done in past years, all are invited to gather for lunch after worship on April 19 to discuss the book, what we learned, and how it has shaped our Lenten journey. Books are available for all who are interested. A $5 donation is welcome for those who wish to contribute.
You can pick one up in the church office or the back of the sanctuary at any time. Contact the church office at [email protected] or 610-642-6650 to arrange a pick up!
