Message from Pastor Diane, July 7: Movie Discussion, Connecting to God, Summer Reading, New Covid-19 Test Sites

Happening at APC

GATHER for a MOVIE DISCUSSION
Join the conversation on Wednesday, July 8th to share what we noticed, what we learned, and what we will remember about the documentary film “Thirteenth.” Watch the film via Netflix on your own time, and come to APC with a lawn chair at 7:00 pm on July 8th to share your thoughts, led by Pastor Judith. (In the event of rain, we will move indoors or to the Parish House covered front porch.)
Focusing on the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution that abolished slavery, “Thirteenth” explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the fact that the nation’s prisons are disproportionately filled with African Americans.
CONNECTING TO GOD
For our worship on Sunday, July 12, we are asking you to share Glimpses of God. Where do you see God? In the beauty of a flower? In the joy of a child at play? In those helping people in need? Send your photos to Eliza Brooks ebrooks35@gmail.com by Wednesday, July 8.

The following Sunday, July 19, consider what God gives to you. Send in your response to “God offers me ___________ (fill in the blank) to Eliza Brooks  ebrooks35@gmail.com  by Wednesday, July 15, to create a Word Cloud to be included in our worship video.
SUMMER READING

One way we can still connect while at home and socially distant, is to read and gather or virtually discuss what we’ve read. Here are two options for summer reading that have been recommended by church members. We will gather to share ideas and discuss as listed.
  • The Book of Joy considers the question, How do you find joy in the midst of so much suffering in our world? The author spent time with Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama, and this book shares their wisdom and insight. Gather at church to discuss on THURSDAY, JULY 16.
  • White Fragility by Robin Diangelo, offers insight into why it’s so hard for white people to talk about racism. For those of us who are white, racial issues often lead to anger, fear, guilt, arguing or silence. The author examines how we can engage more constructively around issues of race. Gather at church to discuss on THURSDAY, JULY 30.
